Protecting Your Rights, Securing Your Future

What should you expect during a DUI probation in Tennessee?

On Behalf of Kessler Law | Sep 18, 2026 | Criminal Law, DUI and DWI

After a court convicts you of a DUI, you likely face a period of supervised probation. In Tennessee, a first-time DUI is usually a Class A misdemeanor. While you may serve only the mandatory minimum time in jail, you may serve the remainder of that sentence on probation. Understanding the requirements of this supervision can help you maintain your freedom.

Reporting requirements

DUI probation comes with important requirements. Once your sentence begins, you will have an assigned probation officer (PO). You should expect to report to their office regularly.

During your meetings, you must provide updates on your progress towards completing court-ordered requirements. You may need to attend DUI classes or other rehabilitation services. Missing a scheduled meeting without prior approval is one of the fastest ways to trigger a violation.

Financial obligations

Additionally, beyond your fines and court fees, you may need to pay monthly probation supervision fees. You are also responsible for costs associated with required programs. These expenses add up quickly, so budgeting accordingly is essential. You must keep receipts of all payments, as a court may consider failing to follow financial obligations a violation.

Travel restrictions

Many DUI probation orders restrict travel outside the county or state without permission. If you need to travel for work or family reasons, request approval ahead of time and get it in writing.

Additionally, you may need to provide updates for your contact information and address. Moving without notifying probation can result in a probation violation.

Drug and alcohol screenings

Testing is common in DUI probation. You may be screened for alcohol, marijuana and other drugs, sometimes on short notice. Consequently, you should assume you need to take tests at any report date and at random times.

Moving forward

Keep regular contact with your probation officer and document everything during your probation. While probation is challenging, completing it successfully allows you to move past this chapter and rebuild your life. If you are facing potential violations, seek an experienced legal representative to evaluate your strategies.
